Course Descriptions

BUSINESS:

          Business Communication: Business Communication is a semester course to help prepare students to be successful professionals. Students will learn and display skills that focus on time management, business etiquette, and personal communication including attire & body language, interviews, and leadership lessons. The course will also engage students in written and oral communication such as emails, memos and business/personal letters, and effective presentations using technology. Building 21st Century résumés will also be incorporated into the course as well as a project-based exam focusing on job application.

           Career Ed: This career education course will focus on the following areas; preparing for the working world, working on the job, career planning, success skills, and personal finances. This class emphasizes important management and economic concepts in relation to business transactions and to the individual as an entrepreneur, employee, consumer, and citizen. Career Planning and Success Skills emphasize the relationship between career planning and lifelong goals as students develop strategies to make an effective transition from education to career.

           Computer Applications: This course will cover basic computer terminology, including various operating systems, browsers and application software as well as exploring the basics of production software across several platforms. Aspects of Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship will also be addressed.

           Consumer Ed: Dave Ramsey's Foundations in Personal Finance. This course is designed to teach financial literacy to students. Topics include Savings, Investing, Dangers of Debt, Consumer Awareness, Credit Bureaus, Budgeting, Career Choices and Taxes and Insurance.

 ENGLISH:

        British Literature: For this course, the class will explore a variety of genres including short story, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama specifically focusing on the study of British Literature. Literary terminology as well as grammar/conventions and vocabulary will be introduced and reviewed via different genres of reading and reinforced in written assignments, activities, and projects. This course will also focus on narrative and argumentative writing, including specifically research and literary analysis.

           English I: For this course, the class will explore a variety of genres including short story, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and novels. Literary terminology as well as grammar/conventions and vocabulary will be introduced and reviewed via different genres of reading and reinforced in written assignments, activities, and projects. This course will also focus on the basics of narrative, argumentative, and explanatory writing, including specifically research and literary analysis.

FINE ARTS:

          Art:  The Christ Our Savior art program provides the opportunity for students to develop their artistic knowledge and skills as children of God. Through the study of art, students will develop creative and critical thinking skills that will help them become effective problem solvers in all aspects of life.

        Art Foundations  1 credit: (2 semesters)  This course will present an introduction to students in the areas of art processes, concepts, and history. Students will also develop the ability to interpret and critique works of art in a logical manner. Hands on assignments will build student skills, grow their creativity and challenge them to try new ideas.

        Art Portfolio -Independent Study:  (1 semester) Open to: 11 & 12 (most beneficial for juniors, but seniors may also take this course. Prerequisite: one year of high school level art with a grade of B or higher and approval of the instructor

Course may be repeated if student has clear goals for the second semester.

This course is designed for students with a serious interest in art who are self-motivated.  The goal of this independent study is to enable the student to refine their skills and create a portfolio of artistic works to be submitted to colleges for evaluation. The emphasis is on creating works of art that exemplify talent in drawing, color, organization, design, and sculpture. The student will plan a course of independent study that will result in the production and presentation of a personal portfolio of work. 

        Art History   1 credit (2 semesters) Open to: 9-12

        Prerequisite:  none

 Students will use the Visual Arts processes of connecting, creating, presenting, and responding to explore, research, and analyze works of art through history. Students will develop and refine their artistic abilities. This course incorporates hands-on activities and consumption of art materials along with the use of technology. Drawing skills will be practiced both in a sketchbook and digitally.

 

 FOREIGN LANGUAGE:  At the core of foreign language learning is developing communication skills through speaking, writing, listening and reading. The integration of culture and language in a way that encourages curiosity and teaches students to analyze and ask questions is an important aspect of German class. Students will explore the language and culture through various means including print material, Internet, other media and oral communication.

             German I: Students will learn the alphabet, numbers, time, basic greetings, as well as to speak and understand simple sentences. A geography component will also be present as students learn about cities, states and lands where German is spoken.  In studying German, students will have the unique opportunity to explore the life and teachings of Martin Luther and explore the spiritual impact of the German language on Lutheran beliefs.

             German II: Prerequisite: German I   Students will continue to build on German I vocabulary and basic grammar, enabling them to form more complex sentences and become more fluent. Students will participate in a mini play performed entirely in German.

HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

          Health: The health curriculum includes learning and exploring the 6 components of health (physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental). Principles of nutrition, exercise and weight management, coping skills, drug use and abuse, prevention and treatment of illness will be covered in this course. Students will also learn about developing healthy, responsible relationships and the benefits of sexual abstinence. Discussions, within the scope of this course particularly those involving relationships, coping, and sexual abstinence, will be presented with the knowledge and reminder of the love of Jesus Christ and explored in scripture.

          PHYSICAL EDUCATION:  Physical education is an important part of the total educational process. The ultimate goal or responsibility of a physical education class is to provide students with the opportunity to develop and maintain the following:  physical fitness, motor skills, creativity, knowledge of rules and safety practices, lifetime leisure activities, co-operation and sportsmanship. Team & individual sports as well as recreational games and rhythms are included in the physical education program.

MATH:

             Calculus: Calculus is taught using graphical, numerical and algebraic modes of learning.  The concepts of the derivative and integral will be explored.  Preparation for the AP exam is available for motivated students.  Because of its frequent use in instruction, a TI-Nspire or TI-84 graphing calculator is strongly recommended.  Prerequisites: successful completion of Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Advanced Math and/or teacher recommendation.

             Advanced Math:  Advanced Math includes the topics of Algebra III, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus.  This course would be strongly recommended for any college-bound student in preparation for College Algebra or Calculus. Because of its frequent use in instruction, a TI-Nspire or TI-84 graphing calculator is strongly recommended.  Prerequisites:  successful completion of Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry and/or teacher recommendation.

             Algebra 1 This course of Algebra explores algebraic expressions, equations, basic mathematical properties and functions. Semester one will cover topics from an introduction to algebraic thinking, the real number system, interpreting data, and equations and inequalities with one variable. Semester two will focus on equations and inequalities with more than one variable, functions, and modeling problems with specific families of functions.

             Geometry   Geometry is the mathematical study of shapes, their properties, and their relationships. Geometry includes an in-depth study of reasoning, polygons, congruence, similarity, right triangles, circles, area, volume, and transformations. Students will be expected to learn and apply basic geometric terms, postulates, and theorems.

 SCIENCE:

             Biology:  Biology is a year long, Freshman level, required course. After a thorough investigation of experimentation and safety, Biology begins with a discussion of the unique properties, of living organisms that set them apart from the non-living components of the environment in which they live in. The presentation of molecular and cellular biology follows and gives a background for the concepts of reproduction and genetics. Units focusing on microbiology, multicellular plants, invertebrate animal life, and vertebrate animals follows. Finally, an overview of the sphere of life on Earth is presented. Much time is spent using methods of experimentation and observation, collection and interpretation of data, and drawing of conclusions.  An extensive amount of time is spent on dissection.  This course is a prerequisite for all other science courses and is a good basic course to prepare students for biology in college.

          Intro to Chemistry:   COSLHS respects the importance of science literacy for all students.  The curriculum, based on Illinois Common Core Standards, is student-based and will allow students to explore, discover, understand, and apply science to our ever changing world. The goal of this course is to allow chemistry to be understandable and accessible to all students.

 This course is an excellent foundation for college chemistry courses.

            Intro to Physics: Intro to Physics is a sophomore level, required course.  It covers the basic concepts of physics.  This course serves as a foundation for all students as it prepares them for higher level physics courses at the high school level and above.  Topics include motion, speed, acceleration, Newton's Laws of Motion, work, energy, electricity, simple machines, and power sources.  Materials are presented as independent study, teacher led discussion, and a focus on hands-on investigation that is designed to apply concepts to real world situations.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:

             U.S. Government: Studies the principles of the American system of government so that you can understand the rights and responsibilities that come with U.S. citizenship. The course teaches you what the Constitution really means, and looks at the various branches of government and the roles they play. You will also learn how laws are enacted and how your civil rights are protected under law.

             World History: World History is a survey course covering the historical development of societies throughout the world. The first semester will focus on the development of the classical civilizations through the Renaissance and Reformation. Second semester will focus on the Age of Revolution, Industrialization and the growth of the modern world.

THEOLOGY: 

             Christian Doctrine: The course covers Paul's journeys and writings about salvation by grace by focusing specifically on the book of Romans as well as the other Pauline epistles. Students will also study Luther's Catechism as they continue to grow in their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. In addition, students will read inspiring non-fictional novels. 

      
          Christian Living:   In this year's theology course we will be looking at the Theology surrounding Vocation. Looking at how to apply God's Word in daily life, and continuing to gain familiarity with Scripture and application of Law and Gospel. First semester we will focus on media consumption, prayer, marriage, and leading a devotional time. Second semester will focus on the theology of stewardship, read a novel, and what it means to be a Christian professional. We will also be developing a yearlong project to explore what vocation is.
