On January 26th, COSLHS joined with Phil’s Friends Inc. to host a cancer support event to benefit the Southern Illinois area and cancer patients around the country.  Phil’s Friends is a Christian organization, founded in Illinois, that sends care packages and cards filled with love and support to men, women, and children fighting cancer in the United States.  Kevin Amstutz from Phil’s Friends spoke to area school students and community members about how Phil Zielke was diagnosed and beat cancer twice.  Through his journey, he was inspired to found Phil’s Friends and began supporting others through free care packages, weekly cards and prayer because of the support he himself had received.

COSLHS had over 250 students, community members, staff, and parents join us to make packages of hope for individuals dealing with cancer.  We built 25 care packages that we will distribute here in Southern Illinois to cancer patients in our community. Each school that participated in the servant event will give boxes to people they know in their area. We were able to complete 19 fleece blankets that will be put in other care packages from Phil's Friends and be sent to patients around the country. We also made about 400 cards that contained hand-written notes of hope. Each person that made a card signed their name and age for a final personal touch.
